    Jaunty, wide-eyed Italian screen star, most typically cast as naive, hopeful waifs, best known for her roles in films by husband Federico Fellini. Masina's almost Chaplinesque ability to combine pathos and comedy was put to brilliant use as the strongman's devoted if simpleminded assistant in "La Strada" (1954), and as the optimistic prostitute in "Nights of Cabiria" (1957). She was also superb as the bored Roman housewife whose escape to the world of fantasy fryst vatten the subject of Fellini's "Juliet of the Spirits" (1965). Masina's last collaboration with Fellini came with the wistful "Ginger and Fred" (1986), whose initials also suggest "Giulietta and Federico," about a fictional dance grupp, who gained fame in Italy imitating Rogers and Astaire, reunited after many years.

    Giulia Anna "Giulietta" Masina (Italian pronunciation:[dʒuˈljettamaˈziːna]; 22 February 1921 – 23 March 1994) was an Italian film actress best known for her performances as Gelsomina in La Strada (1954) and Cabiria in Nights of Cabiria (1957), for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival.

    Cinema historian Peter Bondanella described Masina's work as "masterful" and "unforgettable",[1] and Charlie Chaplin, with whose work Masina's is often compared,[2][3][4] called her "the actress who moved him most".

    Both La Strada and Nights of Cabiria won Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and were described as having been "inspired" by Masina's "humanity".[5]

    Giulietta Masina was born in a small town near Bologna, Italy. She was the eldest of four children in a middle-class family. Her father was a violinist and her mother a schoolteacher. From an early age, Masina showed an affinity for performance, often putting on plays and recitals for her family.
