This is a timeline of women in aviation which describes many of the firsts and achievements of women as pilots and other roles in aviation. Role of women aviators in history
Women have been involved in aviation from the beginnings of both lighter-than air travel and as airplanes, helicopters and space travel were developed. Women pilots were also formerly called "aviatrices" (singular "aviatrix"). Women have been flying powered aircraft since 1908; prior to 1970, however, most were restricted to working privately or in support roles in the aviation industry.[1] Aviation also allowed women to "travel alone on unprecedented journeys". Women who have been successful in various aviation fields have served as mentors to younger women, helping them along in their careers.

Sarla Thukral married a pilot at the age of 16.
The story of Sarla Thukral, who got her pilot licence at the age of 21 is truly an inspiration for many. She was also one of the first Indian women to fly solo.
Sarla Thukral was born in 1914 in New Delhi and married PD Sharma, also a pilot, at the age of 16 and moved to Lahore. She received immense support from her husband and his family to pursue a career as a pilot. After her father-in-law enrolled her in Lahore Flying Club, there was no turning back for her. In 1936, at the age of 21, Sarla obtained her aviation pilot’s licence and flew a Gypso Moth, solo.
