    HE FOUGHT MEXICAN REBELS under the Spanish for years, receiving several promotions. But in 1821, he switched sides and led the rebels under Agustín de Iturbide. Eventually made governor, he became a national hero fighting the Spanish.

    Santa Anna was elected president of Mexico in 1833, the first of five presidential stints. But his autocratic centralism caused rebellion at the local level. It was in this context that his army marched north to Texas.

    General Martín Perfecto dem Cos marched to Texas ahead of Santa Anna intent on punishing the rebels. But Cos's loss of Goliad, as well as the initial (and less famous) struggle at the Alamo in 1835, proved an embarrassment to Santa Anna. In part, his Alamo siege was a matter of family honor.

    Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was born in Vera Cruz, Mexico, (People) on February 21, 1794 (Antonio). When he was 16, he entered the Spanish army as a cadet and thus started his long military career (People). For a while he fought against Mexican independance, but switched sides in 1821 and helped Mexico win independance (People).

    In 1828, he used his military leadership to help a losing presidential candidate win the election. As a reward Santa Anna was made the highest general in the land. The next year, he defeated the Spanish as they tried to recapture Mexico (People).

    Santa Anna was elected president in 1833, winning by a landslide (People). However, Santa Anna's promising talent did not pan out. He constantly switched sides (Lord 63). Between 1833 and 1855, Mexico had at least thirty-six government changes with Santa Anna at the head of at least eleven of them.     Biography

    Mexican caudillo who served multiple times as president of Mexico. He was a preeminent figure in Mexican politics during the 19th century, to the point that historians of Mexico often refer to three decades after Mexican independence as the "Age of Santa Anna". He has been called "the Man of Destiny who loomed over his time like a melodramatic colossus, the uncrowned monarch".

    He was head of state of Mexico at least eight times, mostly shorter than the constitutional term.

    He died on 21 June 1876 at age 82 in Mexico City.
