Chiyoni was a Japanese poet of the Edo period, widely regarded as one of the greatest hona haiku poets.

Mochizuki Chiyome (sometimes known as Mochizuki Chiyojo or Mochizuki Chiyo) was a noblewoman, poet and kunoichi (female ninja) who lived sometime during the 16th century.(1) Little is known about her life and some historians even question her existence. Nevertheless, she has become a legend due to her title as a kunoichi.
We do not know a lot about Chiyome. The years of her birth and death are unknown, although some speculate that she was born sometime in the s or the s.(2) Her year of death is unknown, there is no record of a description on her physical appearance and the pronunciation of her name is a mystery to historians, however, the most common name for her is Chiyome.(3) What we do know about her is all speculation. It is believed that she was the descendant of the famous Kōga ryū ninja Mochizuki Izumo-no-Kami and that she married Mochizuki Moritoki, who was also a descendant of the same man.(4) According to the legend, her husband was k

Mochizuki Chiyome made her mark in history as being responsible for creating an all-female group of ninja agents known as the Kunoichi. The ninja and samurai are iconic Japanese symbols for defense and attack forces. Ninja are spies or mercenaries resorted in unorthodox methods in warfare and were usually in the service of Japanese clans.
Mochizuki Chiyome, also known as Mochizuki Chiyo or Mochizuki Chiyojo was a 16th century Japanese noblewoman and poet. She was the wife of the samurai lord of Shimano’s Saku District, Mochizuki Moritoki, and a descendant of the 15th century ninja of the Kōga-ryū, Mochizuki Izumo-no-Kami. After the death of Mochizuki Moritoki during the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima in , Chiyome was left under the charge of her late husband’s uncle, the head of the Takeda clan, daimyo Takeda Shingen.
