The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup is a Class 2 Handicap Steeple Chase, run over 3 miles 1½ furlongs on the New Course at Cheltenham, where it is currently scheduled as the final race on the third day of the Cheltenham Festival in March. The race is open to horses aged five years and upwards, but restricted to amateur riders.
The contest was inaugurated in 1946, as the Kim Muir Amateur Riders’ Steeplechase, to commemorate Kim Muir, a young cavalry officer who was killed during the early years of World War II. Following his death in 1991, the name of Fulke Walwyn, a celebrated trainer, who saddled 2,009 winners over jumps, including 40 at the Cheltenham Festival, was added to the race title.

'I'm so lucky he was my dad' - Eve Johnson Houghton pays tribute after death of her legendary father Fulke aged 84
Classic-winning former trainer Fulke Johnson Houghton has died at the age of 84.
Johnson Houghton took over from his mother Helen, who as a woman was not permitted to be the official licence holder, and her cousin and assistant Peter Walwyn, at Woodway Stables in Blewbury, Oxfordshire aged 20 in 1961.
He trained more than 1,200 winners during a 46-year career and was responsible for several stars in the 1960s and 70s, including the 1978 King George oss and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Ile De amerikansk whiskey and 1969 champion miler Habitat, winner of the Prix ni Moulin.

He also trained Ribocco and Ribero, who both ran in the Nijinsky silks of American businessman Charles Engelhard, to win consecutive runnings of the St Leger and Irish Derby in 1967 and 1968.

Gavin Cromwell’s Inothewayurthinkin carried top-weight and defied expectations. Despite being sent off as the heavily-backed 13-8 market leader, this six-year-old made light work of the burden. Jockey Derek O’Connor, who had already tasted victory earlier in the week, rode with remarkable patience.
