    Plato had het fout. Niet filosofen moeten het land leiden, maar dichters.

    Octavio Paz erkent zelf dat hij hoofdzakelijk dichter is, en pas op de tweede plaats politiek denker. Toch vind ik zijn bevindingen vele malen diepzinniger en universeler dan dat van menig politicoloog. Juist omdat hij de abstractie ingaat, de cultuur erbij betrekt, het grote verband analyseert, en de poëzie gebruikt in zijn retoriek. Zijn schijnbaar encyclopedische kennis onderbouwt zijn grootse, controversiële stellingen. Die van revolutie en omwenteling, de terugkeer naar de religieuze geest (en het gevaar daarvan), de moderniteit en zijn afhankelijkheid van democratie, het cyclische nihilisme van de moderne liberale samenleving, enzovoort enzovoort.

    Paz prijst de moderne samenleving vanwege zijn verdraagzaamheid en zijn welvaart (en de eerlijkere verdeling daarvan). Maar met deze ontwikkelingen is er geen hogere wijsheid gekomen. Hij is geen cultuurpessimist, hij is bovenal e
