Akon began his career as a singer-rapper, with his big break arriving in with the release of the singles "Locked Up" and "Lonely." Both songs achieving great success, leading up to an album deal with Universal Motown. In the s, Akon branched out onto philanthropy (Akon Lighting Africa), property development (Akon City in Senegal), television/movie production, politics, and others.

    He grew up in Senegal but at age 7, his family settled in New Jersey. His father, Mor Thiam was a successful jazzpercussionist. Soon after moving back to the United States, Akon discovered hip-hop for the first time. Akon has collaborated with and produced for some of the biggest names in the music industry.
