KARACHI: Syed Munawar Hasan, a former chief of the Jamaat-i-Islami, passed away on Friday after a long illness. He was
The JI stalwart was admitted to a private hospital in North Nazimabad a couple of weeks ago and since then was battling multiple diseases from which he had been suffering for the past few years.
“After initial treatment he was moved to the hospital’s intensive care unit,” according to a Jamaat spokesman. “He was put on the ventilator last week after his condition deteriorated, but couldn’t survive.”
Munawar Hasan is survived by wife Ayesha Munawar, who is a leader of the JI women’s wing, a daughter and a son.

Syed Munawar Hasan took oath as the new amir of the Jamaat-e-Islami in March this year. Interestingly, Hasan was, at one time, president of the leftist National Students Federation. Inspired by Maulana Maudoodi, he decided to quit leftist politics and switched over to the Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT) during his Karachi University (KU) days. While pursuing masters degrees in sociology and Islamiyat consecutively at KU, he was the Nazim-i-Aala of the IJT for three years. Subsequently, he served as the amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, Karachi District in In the National Assembly elections, Hasan secured the highest number of votes ever polled by a candidate. He last held the post of JI’s secretary general.
