Canada’s 14th prime minister, Lester B. Pearson, passed into history 50 years ago today. The only Canadian to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, he is considered one of the greatest of Canada’s 20th century prime ministers. Pearson’s legacy, and the policies he pursued between 1963 to 1968 as prime minister, continue to shape Canada today.
He died in Ottawa, on Dec. 27, 1972, four years after he left politics in April of 1968. In retirement he worked on his memoirs, Mike, and was appointed Chancellor of Carleton University. He also taught an international affairs seminar at the same institution.

We are of course surrounded tonight by tremendous eminent historians and people with strong memories of that period who will talk about the tremendous accomplishments of Mr. Pearson and the Top 20 list is a great example of it.
I want to set the tone by going back a little more than 50 years ago, by going back to the election of 1958 when the Liberal Party received what was up to that point the worst drubbing in its history. We were absolutely devastated by Mr. Diefenbaker receiving the strongest majority this country has ever seen..till Brian Mulroney…when we received the second worst drubbing we had ever seen!
