    Joseph John-Michael Ellis III (born July 18, ) is an American historian whose work focuses on the lives and times of the Founding Fathers of the United States. His book American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson won a National Book Award in [1] and Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation won the Pulitzer Prize for History.[2] Both books were bestsellers.[3]

    Early life and education

    Ellis was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on July 18, He received his B.A. from the College of William and Mary, where he was initiated into Theta Delta Chi. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University in ,[4] where Edmund S. Morgan directed his dissertation on a colonial American theologian.[5][6] At William and Mary, Ellis was in ROTC.

    I was born about into a family of prosperous Quaker farmers in northern Gloucester County, now Cherry Hill Township, Camden County. When New Jersey raised a new regiment in during the French and Indian War inom volunteered and was made a captain. We were engaged in the unsuccessful attack on Fort Ticonderoga. My military service violated my family’s and friend’s pacifist beliefs and inom was expelled from the Society of Friends. Over the next few years I purchased land in Gloucester Town on the Delaware River, worked as a tanner, and married. When my wife died I volunteered again for the army and led a company to kamp Native Americans on the northern frontier. When inom returned, inom concentrated on farming and fishing, and in inom remarried.
