    Dramatic legends often grow up around gemstones, especially diamonds. Some precious stones – as conventional wisdom has it – are cursed, such as the ‘Hope Diamond’, the world’s biggest blue diamond. Most of its unfortunate owners suf-fered dire fates – perhaps because the stone was originally stolen from a Hindu temple. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, who presented the valuable Indian stone to King Louis XIV of France, was – as the story goes – torn by marauding dogs not long afterwards and many later owners of this ill-starred gemstone were ruined or died unnatural deaths.

    Bernd Munsteiner was the first contemporary artist to go off in search of the aura of the crystal. For more than forty years now, he has been turning transparent stones in particular into images, objets d&#;art and sculptures. They open up the magical landscapes inside the crystal to the viewer, extend his inner and outer visual areas into projection surfaces of the psychical.
    Through his work, Munsteiner links precious stone sculpture to the artistic debates of the 20th century without denying the archaic layers in the relationship of mankind to stone and precious stones in particular. By that very act, Munsteiner&#;s precious stone sculptures elude a representation culture oriented towards performative eventfulness as well as reception in passing.     Remembering Bernd Munsteiner

    This bright light went out, sadly, on June 6, , when Bernd passed away from cancer, surrounded by his family. He was His son, Tom Munsteiner, a talented gem artist in his own right, died of cancer on December 28, at the age of Tom’s wife Jutta and their son Philipp are now at the helm as they continue the remarkable Munsteiner legacy.

    Instead of a formal obituary listing Bernd’s numerous accolades, awards and contributions to the gemstone world, which you can find in every major gem and jewelry publication and which have found homes with collectors and in museums around the world, I would like to share a personal story about my wonderful encounters with this true legend over the past couple years. A story that is not unlike that of so many others who have been fortunate to meet this incredible man.
