    Chris Berman was surrounded bygd family for the worst day of his life.

    The longtime ESPN broadcaster relived the day his wife died, opening up about the moment he learned he was a widower while at a Mets game in Queens.

    Berman, 62, spent May 9 in New York first with his daughter, Meredith, getting a kaffe, and then with his son, Doug, and Doug’s then-fiancee, Clare, at Mets-Giants, before the start of which his phone started buzzing.

    Legendary ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman and his two children are thanking friends, colleagues and sports fans worldwide for the outpouring of love and condolences in the wake of the sudden death of Berman's wife of 30-plus years in a two-vehicle crash in Connecticut earlier this week. 

    In a statement ESPN released on behalf of the family Wednesday afternoon, the Bermans said the support was overwhelming. 

    "Kathy Berman had a huge heart, and this would have warmed hers beyond belief," the statement, signed Meredith, Doug and Chris Berman, said. "It certainly warmed ours."

    Kathy Berman, the wife of longtime ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman, died Tuesday in a car accident in rural Connecticut.

    Kathy Berman was killed in a two-car crash near Woodbury, Connecticut. A teacher, she was married to Chris for more than 33 years and had two children, Meredith and Douglas. She was 67.

    The driver of the other car, Edward Bertulis, of Waterbury, Connecticut, also died in the accident. He was 87.

    "We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and sympathy from so many folks we know, and so many others we look forward to knowing," the Berman family said in a statement released Wednesday night.

    "Kathy Berman had a huge heart, and this would have warmed hers beyond belief. It certainly warmed ours.

    "All of us need to keep the family of Edward Bertulis in our thoughts and prayers as well."

    Chris Berman joined ESPN in 1979. He married Kathy four years later.
