    The ossuary under the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini at Via Veneto in Rome houses the skulls and bones of some 4,000 former Capuchin monks who were interred there between 1631 and 1870. The dead were buried without coffin and later exhumed to make room for newly deceased. Their remains were transformed into “decorative designs.”

    In the summer of 1867 Mark Twain visited the Capuchin Convent and recorded his observations of the crypt’s “picturesque horrors” in The Innocents Abroad.     This image entitled “All is Vanity” was commissioned by an American illustrator named Charles Allan Gilbert. The image was captivating for me, displaying such a shocking contrast of a feminine and beautiful woman seen within the eyes of a dark skull. Immediately I felt the skull was almost looming above her as she carried on with her duties. Considering the title, I developed an idea that the skull was representative of things like vanity, beauty and wealth being held over the woman’s head. Further, this could be representative of the inevitability of death as a final destination, regardless of the pursuit of vanity, beauty and wealth. The dark color scheme alludes to a sense of darkness that these three things I drew on encompass. Additionally, the composition included the strong contrasting symbol of the darkness these elements hold within the woman, while she doesn’t appear that way on the outside.
