    Kenneth Lara was born February 29, 1940, at Claxton Bay, Trinidad.

    Without any formal training he became famous at age 12 in a talent show.  He joined the calypso tent arena until he joined the Forces and became the ‘singing soldier’ in 1961.

    Calypso was originally used by African slaves in the 1600’s in the West Indies to mock the slave masters and to communicate with each other.  Calypso tents began in Trinidad in 1921.

    While stationed in Jamaica, Lara fell in love his Jamaican wife, Norma; and his hit, Referendum, on the charts for 18 weeks, made it all the way to #4 on the Jamaican hit parade!

    Performing at the Yellow Bird Club, he assumed the name Lord Laro, becoming the talk of Montego.  In 1969, he required structure to formulate all the music in his head, he attended the University of the District of Columbia to study composing and arranging for two years.  With formal training under his belt,
