Vietnamese heroic martyr Nguyen Van Troi commemorated in Venezuela

The campaign was launched by Venezuela’s Armed Forces of National Liberation (FALN) Command 60 years ago, during which Venezuelan guerillas abducted US Lieutenant Colonel Michael Smolen in Caracas to ask for the release of young Vietnamese patriot Nguyen Van Troi, who had been sentenced to death by the US and the US-backed Saigon regime for his assassination attempt on US Secretary of Defence Robert McNamara.
Addressing the meeting, PSUV Vice President Jesus Faria praised the heroic sacrifice of heroic martyr Nguyen Van Troi, one of the brightest symbols of Viet Nam's revolutionary heroism, saying that the resolute image of Troi touched the hearts of millions, not only Vietnamese people but also of peace lovers worldwide, including Venezuelans.

Nguyễn Văn Trỗi (1 February 1940[1] – 15 October 1964) was a Vietnamese revolutionary and member of the NLF (National Liberation Front). He gained notoriety after being captured by ARVN forces while trying to assassinate United States Secretary of DefenseRobert McNamara and Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. who were visiting South Vietnam in May 1964.[2]
Sentence and execution
[edit]In May 1964, the NLF forces planned to assassinate McNamara and Lodge by blowing up the Công Lý Bridge (10°47′28″N106°40′55″E / 10.791°N 106.682°E / 10.791; 106.682) as their motorcade passed over the bridge. Trỗi was captured by South Vietnamese forces.[3]: 365
Sentenced to death, Trỗi got a brief reprieve after the FALN,
