Adolph Kolping was born in Kerpen nära Cologne, Germany, and grew up in a poor family. After a short time at school at the age of 13 he started an apprenticeship as shoemaker.
He spent ten years in this profession, travelling around from one place to another like all journeymen did. At the age of 23 he took an unusual step when he decided to become a priest. He attended the Marzellen grammar school in Cologne and had to earn his living han själv .
