    Ismail Kadare (Albanian: [ismaˈil kadaˈɾe], also spelled Kadaré; 28 January 1936 – 1 July 2024) was an Albanian novelist and poet. He was known for writing short stories until the publication of his first novel, The General of the Dead Army.

    In 1996, he became a lifetime member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of France. In 2005, he won the first Man Booker International Prize and in 2016, he was Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur recipient.

    Some have said that Kadare should have won the Nobel Prize in Literature. His works have been published in about 30 languages.

    Kadare died of a heart attack on 1 July 2024 in Tirana, Albania at the age of 88.[4]

    Ismail Kadare (b. 1936) is at present the only Albanian writer to enjoy a broad international reputation. His talents both as a poet and as a prose writer have lost none of their innovative force over the last three decades. Born and raised in the museum-city of Gjirokastra, Kadare studied in the Faculty of History and Philology at the University of Tirana and subsequently at the Gorky Institute of World Literature in Moscow until 1960 when relations between Albania and the Soviet Union soured. He had begun his literary career in the 1950s as a poet with verse collections such as the modest Frymëzimet djaloshare, Tirana 1954 (Youthful inspiration) and Ëndërrimet, Tirana 1957 (Dreams) which gave proof not only of his 'youthful inspiration' but also of talent and poetic originality.
