A conversation with singer-songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón
Raul Midón lives in a world of sound. Blind since birth, the singer-songwriter and guitarist sets no limits on his musical creativity, writing lyrics that explore the senses with världsfjärmad vibrance. Dubbed “an eclectic adventurist” bygd People magazine, Midón sings with the passion of the best classic soul singers and plays gitarr with the instrumental kotletter of history’s most accomplished jazz musicians. The New York Times once praised him as “a one-man band who turns gitarr into an orchestra and his röst into a chorus.”
The Wortham Center recently had the pleasure of speaking with Midón ahead of his highly anticipated Asheville performance — set for 8 p.m. Saturday, April 15on the Diana Wortham Theatre stage — to learn a bit more about his influences, career highlights and his approach to music.
Wortham Center: Tell me a little about yourself and how you got started in music. What drew you to music origina • Raul Midón has worked with countless legends in the industry including Bill Withers, Herbie Hancock, Sting, Terence Blanchard, & Dianne Reeves to name several. • American singer-songwriter Musical artist Raul Midón (born March 14, ) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from New Mexico. Midón was born prematurely in a rural hospital in Embudo, New Mexico, to parents of Argentine and African-American descent. His father was a folkloric dancer from Argentina. Midón was raised Catholic.[1] Midon and his twin brother Marco were blind as infants after spending time in an incubator without adequate eye protection. The sound of music became integral to Midon's life at age four when his father introduced him to the drum. Midon learned how to play guitar while performing in educational programs at a school for the blind, then at Santa Fe Preparatory School while completing his last two years of high school in Midon then attended the University of Miami, which he selected for its jazz curriculum. He received two Grammy nominations back-to-back in and for his albums “Bad Ass and Blind” and “If You Really Want” in the Best Jazz Vocal Category.
On his new album "Lost & Found", blind singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Raul Midón is joined on this stunning body of work with his friends Andrés Forero (Hamilton, U2) on drums & percussion, Richard Hammond (Hamilton) on bass, Federico Peña (Black Lives) on keyboards & piano.
He’s also had to learn the art of engineering with this album being the first he’s produced solely and assisted by New York recording engineer, Michael O’Reilly, whom he met while making his major label debut album “State of Mind” under the careful eye of legendary producer, Arif Mardin (Queen, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisan Raul Midón
